Extracurricular Substance Use Agreement

Purpose

Participation in extracurricular activities at Duchesne High School is a privilege that provides opportunities for leadership, teamwork, personal growth, and service. Students who choose to participate in athletics, clubs, performing arts, student leadership organizations, academic teams, and other school-sponsored activities represent Duchesne High School and are expected to uphold the values and standards of the school both on and off campus.

The purpose of this agreement is to promote healthy decision-making, student well-being, accountability, and personal responsibility while supporting the mission and values of Duchesne High School.

Scope of the Agreement

This agreement applies to all students who participate in any extracurricular activity sponsored by Duchesne High School, including but not limited to:

  • Athletics
  • Performing Arts
  • National Honor Society
  • House Leadership
  • Academic Teams
  • Clubs and Organizations
  • School-Sponsored Trips and Activities
Note: This agreement remains in effect for the entire four years a student is enrolled, regardless of whether a student is actively participating in an activity at a given time.

Prohibited Conduct

Students participating in extracurricular activities shall not:

1. Substance & Drug Use

Use, possess, purchase, sell, distribute, or be under the influence of:

  • Alcohol
  • Illegal drugs
  • Marijuana or cannabis products
  • Controlled substances not prescribed to student
  • Drug paraphernalia

2. Nicotine & Tobacco

Use, possess, purchase, sell, or distribute:

  • Tobacco products
  • Electronic cigarettes (vapes)
  • Nicotine devices
  • Nicotine pouches
  • Smokeless tobacco products

3. Presence at Gatherings

Knowingly attend or remain at a gathering where illegal drug use or underage alcohol consumption is occurring.

4. Social Media Conduct

Post, share, transmit, or display images, videos, or content on social media that reasonably demonstrate a violation of this agreement.

Reporting and Investigation

When information regarding a possible violation is received, the Dean of Students and/or Administration will investigate the matter. The student will be given an opportunity to respond to the allegation before a determination is made.

Information may be considered from:

● School personnel
● Law enforcement agencies
● Parents or guardians
● Coaches or moderators
● Credible witnesses
● Social media / electronic evidence

* All reports must come from identifiable sources.

Nicotine or Tobacco Violations

First Offense

  • Parent notification
  • Meeting with school administration
  • Completion of an approved educational intervention
  • Suspension from 10% of scheduled contests/performances

Second Offense

  • Parent conference
  • Suspension from 25% of scheduled contests/performances
  • Additional educational or counseling intervention

Third Offense

  • Suspension from 50% of scheduled contests/performances
  • Administrative review of continued extracurricular eligibility

Alcohol, Marijuana, or Illegal Drugs

First Offense

  • Parent conference
  • Substance-use assessment or educational intervention
  • Suspension from 25% of scheduled contests/performances

Second Offense

  • Suspension from 50% of scheduled contests/performances
  • Required assessment and compliance with recommendations

Third Offense

  • Suspension from all extracurricular activities for one calendar year from the date of the violation

Distribution or Sale

Any student found to have sold, distributed, or supplied alcohol, illegal drugs, controlled substances, or nicotine products may be suspended from extracurricular participation for one calendar year and subject to further disciplinary action.

Practices and Meetings

Suspensions apply to competitions, performances, contests, and events. Students must continue to attend practices, rehearsals, and team meetings unless determined otherwise by administration.

Good Samaritan Provision

A student who seeks medical assistance for another individual experiencing a substance-related emergency or voluntarily reports such an emergency may receive reduced consequences at administration discretion.

Appeals Process

A student may appeal a determination under this agreement. Appeals must:

  1. Be submitted in writing within five school days of notification.
  2. Be signed by the student and parent/guardian.
  3. Include the specific basis for the appeal.

The Appeal Committee shall consist of:

Principal Assistant Principal of Student Life Dean of Students Activities / Athletic Director One Faculty Member (selected by student)

* The decision of the appeal committee shall be final.



Extracurricular Substance Use Agreement

  • We understand that participation in extracurricular activities at Duchesne High School is a privilege. We have read and understand the Duchesne High School Extracurricular Substance Use Agreement and agree to abide by its provisions. This one-time signature is acknowledgement and acceptance of policy for a student’s four years of attendance at Duchesne High School.
