New Fitness Center Dedicated
Nearly 50 people gathered at Duchesne High School for a dedication, blessing and ribbon cutting last week for the school's new All-Student Fitness Center, made possible by a sizable donation from the Dempsey family.
Duchesne's All-Student Fitness Center began in April 2015 when "upgrading the weight room equipment' was named as a Fund-a-Need item at the school's annual auction. The project was so well received that it grew into a doubling of the old weight room space and changing of the project scope to become what is now Duchesne's All-Student Fitness Center.
About $22,500 was raised for the weight room at the 2015 auction. Then, the Dempsey family made a donation of over $20,000 toward the project, to honor the memory of Peggy (Pedrucci) Dempsey, who had passed away in 2013. The idea to honor her memory in this way was her son Tom's. He and the family wanted to do something for Peggy in the area of health and wellness because of her nursing career, and the donation to Duchesne for the weight room made perfect sense because Peggy was an alumna of the school. Subsequent to that significant donation, the family made additional contributions, as did others in the Duchesne community, bringing the total to over $60,000, which allowed Duchesne to turn the space into a fitness center for all of its students.
