Our students enjoy many opportunities for service and sacrifice; in most cases, it is the individual's choice to participate. There are two projects, involving the entire student body and faculty and staff, that embody the care and compassion that are hallmarks of the DHS community.
- The Adopt-A-Family project has been a tradition at DHS for 24 years! During the season of Advent, as we watch for the arrival of the Christ child, we look for ways to be Christ for one another. In this Advent tradition at DHS, faculty groups, several student organizations and each homeroom 'adopts' a family-in-need from a local social service agency. The students, parents, faculty and staff contribute food, gifts and, in some cases, basic necessities, to provide a happy Christmas for more than 30 families each year. Following our all-school Mass in Advent, our students deliver the surprises with our Christmas prayers and good wishes.
- Duchesne was one of the first schools in the country to raise enough money (more than $6,000) to purchase 'an ark' of animals for families in a third-world country through Heifer International. (An ark includes 15 pairs of animals, which are used for livestock and agricultural development.) We were proud of that distinction--so proud that, in conjunction with our Lenten sacrifice, we have repeated that feat for six consecutive years!
Throughout the school year, students take on many other projects -- many initiated by students themselves -- that provide service, raise money or advocate for justice.
